Hamara Dil Aapke Paas Hai movie is based on a love story of two people who are Indian by birth but have different cultural values. It tells the story of an Indian girl who falls in love with her boyfriend, but on their visit to his country they find cultural differences that seem insurmountable. The film is set in New York City and Delhi. Protagonist Gauri aka Ginny is born and brought up in the US. She falls in love with Ajay Varma, a NRI living in India, during her first visit to India as part of her company's delegation to set up an office there. When Ginny becomes pregnant, Ajay's family insists that he marry a woman from their social class, so he brings back home India's only daughter Rani. But Ginny and Ajay cannot get along with each other, especially after Ginny learns of Ajay's affair with a British girl. In the end, after a long-drawn battle of wills and emotional scars on both sides, they decide to get on with their lives.
The music for this film is composed by Pritam Chakraborty and the lyrics are penned by Sameer. The soundtrack was released by T-Series on 28 February 2011.
The production and post-production of the film were done by Eros International. The film was shot in New York and New Delhi using a mix of hand-held cameras and a camera crane. The songs were shot in London, Mumbai, and New York City. Some other parts such as the 'Guns N' Roses' guitar shoot was done in Hollywood, USA. The movie was initially held up after the makers failed to get permission from Priyanka Chopra's father Mukesh Jain to take her on board since she did not hold Indian citizenship at that time and hence did not receive the needed green signal from the ministry under which passport licences were issued. Upon release it received mixed reviews from critics. One of the most notable was Rajeev Masand who gave the film two and a half out of five stars, stating that it is unsuccessful as a love story and that though the film manages to keep you engaged throughout its 2 hour run time, it's not easy to warm up to either of the leads. Namrata Joshi from Outlook also criticized the movie saying "Sudhir Mishra has created a feeble love story in his new film, Hamara Dil Aapke Paas Hai." The movie opened on a dull note collecting only 33 lakhs nett on day one. It was then declared a 'Flop' by Box Office India.
The film had its World premier at the London UK, on 16 March 2011 at the Odeon Leicester Square Theatre. It was later released in UK cinemas on 25 March 2011. Later it had it's North American premiere on 3 April 2011 at the Cinema City at University of Toronto where it has played for more than three weeks. It was later released in theatres in Canada on 15 May 2011 by Alliance Atlantis Films.
